Medtronic plc is one of the world's largest medical device companies which operates over 150 countries and has over 90,000 employees. Based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, they developed the first battery-powered pacemaker in 1957 and have since expanded to over 350 plants wordlwide today.
Acquisitions led to strong growth in recent years, making Medtronic the world's leading manufacturer of pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators, heart valves, insulin pumps, aortic stent grafts, coronary stents and neurostimulators. This lead to a local concentration of the plants, which was characterized by different products and regulations of national authorities.
To tackle this challenge, the first steps were the establishment of a central organization and training in the methodology of the Industrie 4.0 Maturity Index to bring everyone on the same level. We also conducted a status quo analysis of all plants and with that we were able to derive local roadmaps. The results were consolidated in a central dashboard to compare the individual plants and derive further measures.
This approach enables a standardized and efficient evaluation of all old and new plants. They now have a detailed overview of improvement potential in the plants and a coordinated, centralized initiation of measures has been made possible.
“The Industrie 4.0 Maturity Platform has been invaluable in standardizing our digitalization assess-ment
by providing a consistent, and simple solution to an extremely complex topic.
With the Power-BI API, we can integrate the datasets directly with our own internal information to take analytics to a new level,
driving result exploration and supporting data-driven, strategic decision making”
